New York with an Accent TODAY

My mother used to call me her little U.N. (United Nations) because I made friends with kids from all over the globe.  I’ve kept up my “whole world” view my entire life, and it colors my art.  That’s why I was asked to/ and am glad to read some of my work at Immigrant Artists and Scholars in New York’s annual event, “New York with an Accent.”

The showcase and awards presentation will take place at Nuyorican Poets Café today, April 14, from 3-6 pm. The 2012 IASNY Trophy for Excellence will be awarded to actress JENNIFER LIM, for her starring role in the Broadway production of CHINGLISH by David Henry Hwang. Featuring performances by outstanding IASNY members and NYC artists committed to multicultural dialogue, this annual event promises to embody the vision of IASNY as a forum for the exchange of ideas, the fostering of an immigrant voice, and a showcase of the breadth of talents in New York City’s (immigrant) community.

In addition to the presentation of the tribute to Lim, the event, held in conjunction with Immigrant Heritage Week, will feature performances by artists committed to multicultural dialogue. Among those scheduled to appear (besides me) are Bogar Alonso, Ondina Frate, Randy Gener, Inma Heredia, Pamela Jackson, Stavri Karamfilov, Jessica Litwak, Aasif Mandvi, Blagovesta Momchedjikova, Christina Quintana, Jelena Stupljanin, Saviana Stanescu, R.E. Toledo, Natasa Trifan, Zishan Ugurlu, and Sanda Weigl.

“People of color, women, and gays — who now have greater access to the centers of influence that ever before — are under pressure to be well-behaved when talking about their struggles. There is an expectation that we can talk about sins but no one must be identified as a sinner: newspapers love to describe words or deeds as “racially charged” even in those cases when it would be more honest to say “racist”; we agree that there is rampant misogyny, but misogynists are nowhere to be found; homophobia is a problem but no one is homophobic. One cumulative effect of this policed language is that when someone dares to point out something as obvious as white privilege, it is seen as unduly provocative. Marginalized voices in America have fewer and fewer avenues to speak plainly about what they suffer; the effect of this enforced civility is that those voices are falsified or blocked entirely from the discourse.”

Coffee Stain Portrait

Ok, so I just finished watching this really sappy sweet movie called, The Secret. And because cutie pie Jay Chou from the movie,The Green Hornet was in it I had to google it. That’s where I found the movie’s soundtrack and then the Jay Chou song from it and then (I know…it’s a lot of then’s) I saw a link for this artist’s coffee project.

Hong Yi (aka Red) was inspired by a lyrics to the Jay Chou song “The cold coffee leaves the saucer, and I hold back feelings for you.” The it goes on about fragmented pieces and autumn leaves… So she created this labor intensive portrait of Jay formed by individual coffee rings. Deep, right?

If you’re like me and you need to see it for yourself, Hong Yi posted the Youtube video of herself in action.
